In this video, endocrine surgeon Daniel T. Ruan, MD, demonstrates a retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (RPA) using an extraperitoneal posterior endoscopic approach to access the adrenal gland. In comparison with laparoscopic adrenalectomy, RPA is more direct and does not require mobilization of intraperitoneal organs or lysis of adhesions. Consequently, RPA is an ideal approach for patients with a history of prior laparotomy, in reoperative adrenal surgery, and for cases that require bilateral adrenal access.
